Current Event Assignments
In order to be a global citizen, you need to know what is happening in the world. Building your awareness of issues and events in our local, state, national, and international communities is a beginning to making a positive difference. Therefore, throughout the year, you will be required to read, summarize, and analyze many current events. You will also be sharing what you learned with your classmates.
Requirements:
Remember to make sure your current event is typed in size 12 font, Times New Roman or Arial Font, and has 1.5 spacing! Include a work cited, attach a copy of the article to your write up, and print a copy of the rubric. * After the first Current Event Assignment you must print out on your own rubric to hand in with your write up.
Below you will find copies of the "Current Event Assignment" handout, rubric, and an example.
FIRST Current Event Topic: Gun Control/ Shootings
Due Date: Friday, March 23rd
Our current chapter of study focuses on the introduction of new weapons of war. Unfortunately, recent events over the past decade have brought to light just how dangerous these arms can be. Third quarter's current event assignment will be on this topic. This current event will differ from the first two current events in the following ways:
Instead of finding an article concerning gun control, summarizing it, and responding to it in paragraphs 2 and 3; you will write a regular essay with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Think of this as a DBQ Style essay, but instead of referencing documents in your body paragraphs you will be responsible for citing articles/references to back your opinion up. I want your write up to propose solutions to the gun control debate. These solutions should be both proactive and reactive. I will explain the difference below.
You need to include at least 2 articles (total) as evidence in your body paragraphs.
More information will be given in class.
Current Event Example:
Will be uploaded, Tuesday, March 6th

I want your write up to propose solutions to the gun control debate. These solutions should be both proactive and reactive. I will explain the difference below.
You need to include at least 2 articles (total) as evidence in your body paragraphs.
- Introduction Paragraph: Your introduction paragraph must start with a broad introduction statement on the gun control debate. Your last sentences should outline what you plan to talk about in paragraphs 2 and 3. Questions to think about in your introduction to help shape this paragraph: Where has the “gun control” debate stemmed from? What recent events have brought this to light? What right guarantees that American citizens are allowed to have guns? You can include statistics on gun violence, gun ownership, etc.
- Body 1 PROACTIVE: In your first body paragraph I want you to write about what ideas that you propose (or have read about) can be done to be proactive on gun violence in America. Proactive can be defined as: creating or controlling a situation by causing something to happen rather than responding to it after it has happened. Questions to think about to shape this paragraph: Do you think our right to bear arms should be limited? Should certain guns be outlawed? Should new laws come along with obtaining guns? Is this a gun issue or a mental health issue? How should communities work together to deal with mental health issues? Will eliminating all guns take care of this issue?Should armed guards be put in schools across the country?
- Body 2: REACTIVE: In your second body paragraph I want you to write about ideas that you propose (or have read about) can be done to be reactive on gun violence in America. Reactive can be defined as: acting in response to a situation rather than creating or controlling it. Questions to shape this paragraph: What do you feel should be done at schools to prepare for shootings? Should lock-down drills be changed? Should there be tougher punishments on those who commit shootings?
Conclusion: Your conclusion should start by summarizing the main points of your body paragraphs and have a concluding statement.
